Music Groups Near Manchester - For People Who'd Rather Play
Manchester is one of the great music cities. Most of us who live here consume that heritage constantly - gigs, records, open-mic nights - but very few of us ever make music ourselves. There's a gap between loving music and joining it, and it's usually filled with one of three thoughts: "I can't play anything", "I can't sing", or "it's too late for that".
Our sessions exist to close that gap. We're a community music group that meets four times a week in Bury and Ramsbottom - an easy trip from most of Greater Manchester - where people who have never played an instrument come together to strum and sing popular songs. No auditions, no sheet music, no previous anything. You'll borrow a ukulele, learn two chords, and be part of the band before the hour's out.
Why the ukulele? Because it's the fastest route from "I've never played" to "I'm making music with other people" that we know of: four strings, soft on the fingers, and forgiving enough that a beginner strum still sounds like a song. Our members came to us as nurses, engineers, students, retirees and teachers - almost none had a musical background. Now they have a weekly session they genuinely look forward to.
Since 2021 we've grown from one group to four, as a community interest company. Visiting from the city is easier than you'd think:

What Happens at a Session
- You'll be met and shown where to sit - we keep first-timers together, and someone is always nearby to help.
- Borrow a ukulele free of charge if you don't have one; we'll tune it for you.
- Two chords and a song. That's genuinely the first session. Four strings make the start shallow, not steep.
- Strum and sing together through familiar songs from our songbook - folk to modern pop. Loud, quiet, in tune or not, it all blends.
- Leave when it ends, having played music with a group of people, which is a rarer experience for adults than it should be.
Small doses of technique and theory are woven in for those who want depth, and experienced players get fuller arrangements to chew on. Everyone participates at their own level - there's never a moment where you're asked to play alone.
Why a Group Beats Going It Alone
You could learn an instrument from videos at home. Most people don't get far that way, because the missing ingredient isn't information - it's other people. Playing music in a group is what makes it stick: the weekly rhythm, the shared songs, the low-stakes accountability of people who noticed you weren't there last week.
Research on group music-making keeps finding the same things: lower anxiety and stress, better mood, stronger social connection. Our members mostly describe it more simply - it's the best hour of their week.
What to Bring
- Yourself. That covers it - we lend instruments free if you don't have one (just mention it when you book).
- A ukulele if you own one (or a guitar - a few members started on borrowed instruments and got hooked).
- Our songbook - grab the UGN Songbook (PDF) for a tablet or print, or use the paper copies we bring.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where's the closest session to Manchester? Thursday evenings at Wyldes in Bury town centre - 30 minutes on the Metrolink from the city centre, then a short walk. Ramsbottom is around 30 minutes by train from Victoria.
I've never played anything. Really, is that fine? Really. It's the norm here, not the exception. Your first session is one easy chord and a song you'll recognise from the radio.
Do I need to bring an instrument? No - we provide ukuleles free of charge. Just say so when booking so we bring enough.
Do I have to sing in front of people? Group singing is part of the format, but it's collective, not solo - and volume is entirely your choice. Plenty of people start by humming and find themselves singing out within a few weeks.
Why not just join a choir in Manchester? If a choir appeals, do it! But many people find auditions, sheet music or performance pressure off-putting. In our sessions nobody is assessed, the instrument keeps your hands busy (which helps if singing alone feels exposed), and you'll play recognisable songs from week one.
Is the journey from the city worth it? Our Manchester members think so - the tram or train ride is dead time you'd otherwise spend doomscrolling, and Ramsbottom or Bury make a nice evening of it. Several members combine the session with a meal out.
What if I can only come once a month? Come once a month. There's no attendance requirement - some members come weekly, some dip in when life allows. Both are welcome.
Can I bring a friend? Yes - sessions are better with someone you know, and booking two spaces is no problem at all.
