Music Group Sessions Near Bolton
Bolton people know how to show up for each other - it's one of the things that makes the town what it is. What Bolton doesn't have much of, though, is somewhere for adults to actually make music together. Not watch it, not stream it, but sit in a room with other people and play.
That's what we run. Uke Group North is a community interest company that's been holding weekly sing-and-strum sessions since 2021, and we're closer than you might think - Bury is roughly twenty minutes up the A58, and Ramsbottom a little further along a pleasant road. Whether you're in the town centre, Farnworth, Horwich, Westhoughton or out towards Kearsley or Turton, the trip is short enough to do weekly without it becoming a chore.
Here's the bit people don't expect: you don't need to have ever played anything. The instrument at the heart of our sessions is the ukulele - four strings, gentle on the fingers, and simple enough that first-timers play a recognisable song in their very first session. We hand out instruments free of charge, there are no auditions and no sheet music, and the singing is a group effort where nobody stands out. Members range from children to people in their eighties, and most had never touched an instrument before they walked in.
We now run four sessions a week. For Bolton, two stand out:

What Happens at a Session
- You're met at the door. We'll show you where to sit and, if you're borrowing one, hand you a ukulele and get it tuned before you've finished your first chat.
- Two chords, taught slowly. With four strings, that's enough to unlock a whole set of songs. Help comes to you - you never have to put your hand up.
- The room plays and sings together. Folk favourites, pop hits, singalong standards - all from our songbook, all at whatever volume you're comfortable with.
- Then home again, 90 minutes or an hour later, having spent the evening actually doing something rather than watching it.
Along the way we slip in small amounts of technique and music theory for anyone curious, and experienced players get busier arrangements to get stuck into. Nobody is ever asked to play solo.
Why the Ukulele Makes Group Music Possible
Most instruments ask a lot of you before the music starts: months of sore fingers, chord shapes that won't land, practice rooms and patience. The ukulele asks very little - and that's the whole point of a group like ours.
- Four strings, not six. Chords come sooner, and sooner chords mean sooner songs.
- Nylon strings are kind to beginners. Your fingertips won't regret the first few weeks.
- It's light and portable. Small enough to keep in the car and bring up the A58 every week.
- It laughs along. Even a wobbly beginner strum sounds like something you'd want to hear.
- It's built for singing around. The ukulele backs a voice beautifully, and shared singing is the glue of every session we run.
Plenty of members arrived convinced they weren't the musical type. The ukulele is how we prove them wrong in a single evening - and if you find yourself wanting more afterwards, there's a clear path to keep going.
What to Bring
- Nothing at all, if you'd rather - just tell us you need to borrow a ukulele when you book, and it will be waiting for you.
- Your own ukulele, if you have one gathering dust - any size or state, we'll get it tuned and playing.
- The songbook - download the UGN Songbook (PDF) to a tablet or print it, though we always have paper copies in the room.
One-to-One Lessons with Ben
Some people like to build confidence privately before joining a group, and others simply prefer one-to-one teaching. Ben - our founder and the facilitator at every session - offers individual ukulele lessons with more than 20 years of music behind him on piano, guitar and bass, and eight years of making the ukulele click for complete beginners.
His approach is patient and relaxed, which nervous learners in particular seem to appreciate. He travels to students within around 30 miles of Ramsbottom - Bolton and its surrounding towns are comfortably inside that - and teaches over Zoom for anyone further afield.
Lesson prices: - 30 minutes: £20 - 60 minutes: £30
Book Your Place
We deliberately cap numbers at every session so nobody sits lost at the back, which means it's worth reserving ahead. Use our contact page or email a1giwAt-N6xsvD9mj61Nhw6qlHo5wp9l2yc, mention which session you'd like and whether you'd like to borrow an instrument, and we'll do the rest.
All abilities welcome - complete beginners are especially encouraged!
If what you're really after is learning the instrument itself at your own pace, have a look at our ukulele lessons in Bolton page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which session works best for someone travelling from Bolton? Thursday evenings at Wyldes - it's the closest to home, the drive is a straight run up the A58, and parking in Bury is free after 6pm. If your mornings are free instead, Mondays at Greenmount are the next nearest.
Is the journey from Bolton worth it for a music group? Our Bolton members think so - twenty minutes each way in exchange for a weekly group session with instruments provided, and no local equivalent to compare it with. Several car-share once they've made friends in the group.
I live in Horwich or Westhoughton - is it too far? Not really. Allow 25 to 30 minutes depending on traffic, and the Thursday evening session lines up well with the end of the working day. Farnworth and Kearsley are closer still.
Do I need to be able to read music? No. Nothing in our sessions is written on a stave - songs are taught by ear from the songbook, with chord names and words on the page.
What if my singing is terrible? Perfect - you'll fit right in. The singing in our sessions is collective, never solo, and blended together it sounds far better than any of us individually.
Is there an age range at the sessions? From children to members in their eighties. The spread of ages is one of the things people comment on most after their first visit.
Do I have to come every week? No. There's no subscription and no commitment beyond the £8 per session you attend. Some members come every week, others whenever the diary allows.
Can I try a single session before deciding? That's exactly how most people start. Book a spot, borrow a ukulele, and see how the evening feels - no strings attached, other than the four on the instrument.
What kind of songs will we be playing? A bit of everything - old singalong standards, folk classics and recognisable modern pop, all arranged so two chords can carry them in the early weeks.
Do you ever perform for an audience? Occasionally we play small local events, but it's entirely optional. Plenty of members have never performed and never want to, and the sessions are designed to be just as rewarding without it.
